ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid New Jersey Principal Certificate or eligibility
- Minimum experience as determined by the board
- Demonstrated leadership capability in the areas of curriculum and staff development
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status
- Current residency in New Jersey, approved residency waiver or candidate agrees to obtain residency within one year of employment
REPORTS TO: Principal/Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent
JOB GOAL: To assist the principal in providing school-wide leadership. An Assistant Principal will work toward the educational outcome goals adopted by the Board of Education; providing educational direction and supervision to all departments. They will assume the responsibility for school year teacher scheduling including substitutes; functions as District Affirmative Action Officer, participate in the total school staff evaluation, act as a proper model for pupils both in school and outside, and work harmoniously with the students, citizens, administrators, and staff of the school district.

- Assists the principal in duties related to instruction, supervision, evaluation and the overall administration of the school.
- Serves as building administrator in the absence of the principal.
- Requisitions supplies, textbooks and equipment, conducts inventories, maintains records, and reviews receipts and purchase orders for such material.
- Assists in conducting safety inspections of the building and grounds. Submits maintenance requests.
- Assists the principal in coordinating transportation, custodial, cafeteria and other support services.
- Greets and professionally interacts with parents and visitors in the absence of the school principal.
- Provides for safety drill practice activities, traffic control, and similar activities to insure students’ safety and security.
- Works cooperatively with administration in development of curricular program.
- Serve on the district’s committees germane to areas of responsibility.
Student discipline, supervision of students
- Assists in maintaining high standards of student conduct and enforcing discipline policies.
- Assists in supervision of the cafeteria during lunch hours.
- Provides guidance to individual students, resolves individual behavioral problems.
- Attends extra curricular and athletic activities at the school when necessary.
- Expresses firmness, consistency, friendliness, and impartiality with pupils in regards to the discipline code.
- Participates in parent conferences, if requested.
- Provides guidance to, and works cooperatively with, parents and community groups.
- Assumes the responsibility for the issuance and supervision of student lockers.
- Assumes the responsibility for the control and supervision of student and faculty parking.
- Assumes the responsibility for preparing and updating the Code of Student Conduct.
- Supervises and coordinates all end of year fine collections.
- Assumes the responsibility for alternate grade student discipline and attendance matters.
- Assists in the supervision of the co-curricular and social activities program.
Record-keeping, reporting and scheduling
- Supervises the reporting and monitoring of student attendance, and works with the attendance supervisor for investigative follow-up actions.
- Assists in the preparation of required reports of violence, vandalism, substance abuse, and possession of firearms.
- Assists in scheduling and coordinating all health examinations.
- Performs such record-keeping and reporting functions as the principal may direct.
- Acts as the HIB Anti-Bullying Specialist for his/her respective school.
- Maintains proper operation of the master clock and bell schedule.
Interaction with school staff
- Supervises assigned departments, teachers and other staff as designated by the principal.
- Supervises extracurricular programs, assembly programs and assignment of faculty members to assist at school functions.
- Assists in the coordination and supervision of special programs funded by the state or federal government.
- Makes recommendations to the principal for changes in policies, personnel practicesand other such matters that may result in a more effective school administration.
- Assumes the responsibility for building employee relations and participates in resolving building grievances, complaints, and labor difficulties.
- Encourages the professional growth of teachers and helps them to develop to their highest potential.
- Participates in the selection of staff members.
Other
- Assists in the planning and supervision of activities to promote pupil and employee health and safety.
- Attends meetings of professional organizations and participates in appropriate workshops on professional improvement. Keeps apprised of current developments in education through attendance at varied programs and through professional readings.
- Assumes responsibility for school district security plan.
- Attends meetings as requested and required.
- Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the principal or superintendent.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 Months
SALARY: To be determined by the Board of Education.
ANNUAL EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with state law and provisions of the board’s policy on the evaluation of certified staff.
